The typical kitchens today… Are okay.
They get the job done. They have all the bits and bobs needed: utensils, storage and tools. And while this might all sound perfect and quite mundane (which, frankly, it is), look a little closer and something seems to be missing. A sense of warmth, calm, or a kind of natural, “put together” feel.
Often, the reasons are, in simple terms, too much plastic, too much clutter and a lack of intention. Enter wooden kitchen essentials, and they’re not a trend or a fad. It is quite simply, a small adjustment to how the kitchen looks, feels and works.

To begin with, arguably the item you’ll pick up more than any other – the chopping board. It’s an easy thing to overlook as it’s quite literally where everything begins when it comes to food prep. Wooden chopping boards don’t just work. They feel grounded, they sit elegantly on the counter, and they develop a wonderful patina with use. Unlike their plastic cousins, they add a smooth, natural quality rather than a stark, functional plastic look.
Next up are wooden spatulas and spoons – the unsung heroes of day-to-day cooking. You never really think of them, but they’re the items constantly in your hand: for stirring, flipping, scraping or mixing. Wooden items feel different – they don’t get hot to the touch, they don’t damage your non-stick pans and they just make cooking seem to flow more naturally; less frantically, perhaps.
Now, picture this, you serve your chai or pakora on a wooden tray, not a regular plastic one. The tea is the same, the biscuits are the same-but is the whole experience? Totally different. Wooden serving dishes have an understated warmth to them that transforms every simple interaction.
And now, for a problem we’ve all dealt with in Indian kitchens-cluttered spices. Too many jars, too little order. A wooden spice organiser, on the other hand, does just that, gives your spices a designated space. Not only does it make everything appear neater and more organised, it also makes things more accessible.
And finally, a change I think is so underrated-a set of wooden bowls. Be it for mixing dough, for serving food or even for holding fruit, the understated warmth and natural elegance of wooden bowls cannot be replicated by steel or plastic utensils. They don’t demand attention, yet they instantly elevate the aesthetic of any space.
The best thing about all of these changes is that they aren’t huge, radical ones, but all of these subtle changes put together completely elevate the vibe of your kitchen from ‘just functional’ to something you enjoy being in.
Wood exudes warmth and simplicity, and in our everyday life it brings a sense of intentionality to cooking. So if you feel like your kitchen is missing something, it’s not because you need more things, it’s because you need better things.
Begin with the little changes. Begin with wood.
